Girls, Women and Alcohol: The changing nature of female alcohol consumption in Ireland, takes place on Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at the Westin Hotel, Dublin 2, from 10.30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

International and Irish speakers will examine the factors influencing the changing culture of drinking among Irish girls and women, and what harms they are experiencing as a result. Attendees will hear from leading experts in alcohol policy and health, while some speakers will also be addressing their personal experiences with alcohol.

  • Ann Dowsett Johnston, author and alcohol policy advocate
  • Katherine Brown, Director, Institute of Alcohol Studies, UK
  • Lucy Rocca,  author and founder of Soberistas.com
  • Dr Triona McCarthy, Consultant in Public Health Medicine
  • Clíona Saidléar, Executive Director, Rape Crisis Network of Ireland
  • Dr Orla Crosbie, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Cork University Hospital.

The keynote speaker for this conference is Ann Dowsett Johnston, the best-selling author of Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol, named one of the top 10 books of last year by the Washington Post.

An award-winning journalist with an expertise in alcohol policy, Ann Dowsett Johnston is the founder of Canada’s National Roundtable on Girls, Women and Alcohol. She lives in Toronto, and is the CEO of the Pine River Foundation, which focuses on adolescent addiction issues and mental health.

Chair for the conference will be journalist Ann Marie Hourihane, who last year wrote   The sobriety diaries for The Irish Times.

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, we have had to postpone the launch of the research, Children’s Exposure to Alcohol Marketing in Ireland. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. This research launch will now take place at a separate event, which will be free to attend, and details of this event will be available on alcoholireland.ie shortly.
