An essential element in Ireland’s success story re smoking was the newly established office of tobacco control. “….It gave us capacity to deal with the issue,”
We need an Office for Alcohol Harm Reduction to drive policy re alcohol. @MichealMartinTD

Right now we have utterly incoherent alcohol policy, with Dept of Health seeking to reduce alc use and Dept of Justice seeking to enhance it. Many other examples from Depts of Enterprise, Agriculture, Finance and more.
We can learn from tobacco success.

Scale of alcohol industry lobbying against even the most basic info for consumers is laid bare. Shows need for extreme caution by policy makers in interaction with vested interests.
It makes Ireland’s achievement re health info labelling even more impressive. 👏

An important listen, given the culture of constant advertising that we’re living in. #alcoholawareness
I had the pleasure of speaking with experts @Noeline_B and @nnniccc about protecting young people from alcohol advertising online. Nic's research is fascinating but also terrifying - it's no longer about a bad ad, it's about how they are being served to us
A really great discussion on children’s rights and alcohol marketing. Thanks so much to Noeline Blackwell @Noeline_B and Nicholas Carah @nnniccc for their interesting insights.
"What do you do to protect children? You build safe products. We don't have safety standards that protect children online. Commercial interests often ignore these things, so we must ensure there are regulations around that and sanctions around breach of regulation."
It’s time to listen to front line workers who will have to carry the burden of increased licensing hours. Paramedics, ED staff, Gardai. @SimonHarrisTD

Huge concern about alcohol sports marketing.
🚨Our latest podcast - protecting children from alcohol advertising online is available now - featuring excellent insights from @ChildRightsIRL @Noeline_B and @nnniccc https://shows.acast.com/the-alcohol-file/episodes/protecting-children-from-alcohol-advertising-online
Listen to @nnniccc talk about 'dark' marketing - his research found that young people are being targeted online by alcohol companies, but only they can see it. Protecting children online requires a new kind of regulation - robust, independent and transparent.
