“Alcohol Policy in Practice” is a Postgraduate CPD course being held by the UK Centre for Tobacco & Alcohol Studies,
It takes place at the University of Edinburgh from September 22 to 25, 2014,
This course offers robust and current learning about issues in alcohol policy and practice, and a unique opportunity to network with leading academics and policy-makers.
It focuses on four key areas: Alcohol Policy, Alcohol Use and Effects, Price Place and Promotion, and Advocacy, Action and Opposition.
Among those speaking at the course are:
- Sir Ian Gilmore – Effective Alcohol Policy
- Dr. John Holmes, Sheffield Alcohol Research Group – Min Unit Pricing & measuring population consumption
- Dr. Ann Hope, Trinity College Dublin – International research on alcohol harm to others
- Prof. Christine Griffin, University of Bath – Alcohol marketing, social media, youth drinking cultures
There will also be inputs from the Universities of Edinburgh and Bristol concerning alcohol and health, drinking cues, the alcohol industry and alcohol brief interventions
There will be a focus on evidence-based options for local and strategic action throughout this course.

UKCTAS is a Public Health Research Centre of Excellence funded by the UK Clinical Research Collaboration. It is a partnership of 13 universities (12 in the UK and 1 in New Zealand) and pat of its remit is to build capacity for high quality research into alcohol policy and practice, and to engage with practitioners and policy makers. This course is being delivered as part of UKCTAS commitment to such engagement under its funding. It will be delivered largely by senior academics, mainly from UKCTAS but also others including policy makers and advocates.
