Research Assistant [Graduate opportunity].
Alcohol Action Ireland is the national charity for alcohol-related issues. We are an independent voice for advocacy and policy change, working to reduce levels of alcohol harm in Ireland and improve public health, safety and wellbeing.
We campaign for the burden of alcohol harm to be lifted from the individual, community and State, and have a strong track record in campaigning, advocacy, research and information provision.
Our work involves providing information on alcohol-related issues, creating awareness of alcohol-related harm and offering policy solutions with the potential to reduce that harm, with an emphasis on the implementation of the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill.
Under the guidance of Alcohol Action Ireland (AAI) staff, the Research Assistant will assist in data collection and information gathering to support ongoing and proposed research, policy/strategy development. While supporting the AAI team, the Assistant will gain valuable insight into the working of a national non-government organisation as well as build his/her capacity for future work opportunities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Review and report on literature, legislation and research relevant to the AAI’s objective and role
- Contribute input to development of day to day operations, research questions, concept notes, and field research
- Assist in drafting research reports, briefing notes, policy papers, and other materials as required.
- Represent AAI, where appropriate, in programme meetings, coordination meetings, events, workshops, and meetings with stakeholders.
- Co-ordinate and contribute to content of AAI Social media platforms.
- Undertake a wide range of administrative tasks and other duties as required to support the policy and administration functions.
Competencies
The successful candidate will possess some, or all, of the following characteristics:
- Proven record of successful interaction with individuals from a diverse array of backgrounds.
- Understanding of the social, economic, institutional, and political environment in Ireland including an understanding of public health legislative programmes and policy initiatives
- Ability to conduct evidence-based policy analysis
- An enthusiasm to play an active role in the development of policy and direction
- Comprehensive knowledge of IT programs, including Microsoft Excel and Word, with good communications skills
- Punctuality, intellectual curiosity, willingness to take initiative and work to meet deadlines
Required Skills and Experience
Education
- Completed degree in Public Health, Economics and/or Social Sciences but within two years of graduation, only.
Experience
- Some experience working in the field of health or social policy or research at a professional level (desirable)
