Ireland must stay the course on alcohol labelling
Home » Take action » Ireland must stay the course on alcohol labelling

Campaign start date: 09/04/2025
It is dismaying and concerning in equal measure that government is even considering ‘examining again’ Ireland’s hard-won world leading health information labelling of alcohol products. Dismaying because linking global trading concerns brought on by Trump’s tariffs to the Irish health issue of labelling makes no sense given labelling applies only to alcohol products sold in Ireland and has absolutely no impact on exports.
Concerning because labelling is a hugely important part of the democratically mandated Public Health (Alcohol) Act (2018) which aims to save lives by reducing Ireland’s alcohol consumption and the result of backtracking on this vital measure will be counted in lost and disrupted lives.
The move would also play right into the hands of the alcohol industry who for years have worked doggedly to keep the public in the dark over the harm their product causes: that it causes cancer, liver disease, heart disease and contributes to a myriad of mental health and social harms.
Labelling will ensure consumers are told the truth that alcohol causes cancer and liver disease. Consumers have the right to be informed of this when making the decision to buy alcohol. Taking this away would be akin to taking away the health information labels from cigarettes. It is a retrograde step and should not be countenanced by government.

National and international support
AAI has written to the Taoiseach, Tánaiste, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Minister for Health, Minister for Finance and Minister for Enterprise. AAI met with Minister of State for Public Health, Wellbeing and National Drugs Strategy, Jennifer Murnane O’Connor, on 9 April 2025.
We are really heartened by the support received already and by the actions of multiple advocates in Ireland and internationally.
- The former CMO Dr Tony Holohan had a letter published in the Irish Times.
- Long-time campaigner for the Public Health (Alcohol) Act John Higgins, had a letter published in the Irish Independent.
- The WHO technical alcohol labelling group issued a letter which was covered in the Irish Examiner.
- The European Alcohol Policy Alliance and the European Association for the Study of the Liver both wrote to the Taoiseach.
