The Case for Protecting Children from Alcohol Marketing
Alcohol Action Ireland and Eurocare – European Alcohol Policy Alliance are to host a policy seminar taking place on Wednesday, 7th June from 10.30am to 2.30pm in Norway House, Rue Archimede 17, Brussels.
The event will explore how European Member States are working to protect children from alcohol marketing, and what further steps are necessary from an EU perspective. The European Commissioner for Health, Vytenis Andriukaitis will speak at the seminar on political challenges being faced in this regard.
Deputy Marcella Corcoran Kennedy TD, Ireland’s Minister for Health Promotion will speak about the Irish Government’s landmark public health legislation, the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill, which includes specific measures to increase protection for children from alcohol marketing. When adopted, the Irish Bill could serve as an exemplary alcohol policy aligning with European frameworks. While Maris Jesse, the Deputy Secretary General of Ministry of Social Affairs of Estonia, will focus on the forthcoming Estonia presidency. At EU Council level, Estonia has committed to focusing its attention on matters related to alcohol policy during its presidency of the European Council in the second half of 2017.
