Alcohol Action Ireland will address the Joint Committee on Transport and Communications on the issue of alcohol industry sponsorship of sports tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.
The Committee will be resuming its consultations on the implications of possible legislation to ban the sponsorship of major sporting events by the drinks industry – a key recommendation of the Steering Group Report on the National Substance Misuse Strategy – following representations from Ireland’s three largest sporting organisations – the GAA, FAI and IRFU – last month.
Alcohol Action Ireland will be represented before the Committee by two of its board members, Professor Joe Barry, Public Health Specialist, and Dr Bobby Smyth, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist.
Joining Alcohol Action Ireland, the national charity for alcohol-related issues, before the Committee will be the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland.
Copies of the full statements to the Committee by Professor Barry and Dr Smyth will be available on this website tomorrow, while you can watch the meeting, which starts at 11 a.m., live tomorrow morning by selecting the Committee Room 4 link on the Oireachtas website.
