HIS on-stage persona is that of a drunkard, but Maia Dunphy has confessed that her husband, comedian Johnny Vegas (pictured), is a sober character behind closed doors.
Ms Dunphy told the Irish Independent that she is, in fact, the real drinker in their house, and will sip on wine or vodka while her other half drinks tea.
The couple, who married three years ago, mostly spend time in separate countries due to their work.
The Irish comic writer said that even though they were currently under one roof, she’s still enjoying a tipple most evenings.
“I suppose our situation is unusual, but Johnny is spending more time here lately and he doesn’t actually drink at home at all.
“His character stuff on stage is a persona, but he’s not like that. More often than not he’s having a cup of tea and I’d still drink my vodka and tonic.”
The broadcaster’s admission came as she is preparing to air her new television documentary ‘Merlot and Me’ on RTE.
The programme explores women’s reliance on a mid-week drink and Ireland’s association with alcohol in social settings.
Dalkey-based Ms Dunphy was inspired to take on the project when she began to notice how often she and her friends consumed alcohol during the week.
“I don’t think I have a problem but I’d still consume a fair amount of units each week and when I began researching this it scared me completely,” she said.
“Alcohol is more of a commodity now. It’s easy to pick up a bottle with bread and milk in the supermarket. It’s become par for the course.
“Also, if I don’t drink on a night out everyone thinks I’m pregnant, which drives me nuts.”
‘Merlot and Me’ is on RTE Two on Monday at 9.30pm.
