Alcohol Awareness Week: March 18 to 22

Ireland’s first Alcohol Awareness Week takes place from March 18 to 22 next, with Alcohol Action Ireland participating in a week of events focused on raising awareness of alcohol-related harm in Ireland and the policy solutions that can reduce that harm.

A series of events will take place throughout the week including a half day conference entitled,The Power of Local Community in Reducing Harmful Drinking”. This will run alongside Ireland’s National Healthcare Conference taking place in the National Convention Centre Dublin on Wednesday, March 20.

Speakers include Minister of State at the Department of Health Alex White; Dr. Ann Hope, Department of Public Health and Primary Care, Trinity College Dublin; Dr. Walter Kern Scheffeldt, Clinical Psychologist, Zurich University of Teacher Education, and Claire Dineen Chair of the National Forum of the Family Resource Centre Programme.

There will also be a “Soapbox” session where speakers will get three minutes to present their arguments on how to effect changes. Among those taking part in this session are Alcohol Action Ireland CEO Fiona Ryan, Irish Times columnist John Waters;   President Union of Students in Ireland, John Logue; Denis Bradley, former Vice Chair of Northern Ireland Policing Board, and Eamon O’Kane, Director of Derry Healthy Cities.

Key products developed by Alcohol Action Ireland will also be launched Alcohol Awareness Week, following on from the recent launch of [wpfilebase tag=fileurl id=127 linktext=’our latest fact sheet, which focuses on alcohol marketing, including its aim, how it works, the impact it has and what would make a difference in terms of regulation.’ /]

We will launch a new information leaflet, focusing on the link between alcohol consumption and cancer, as well as our new website, DrinkHelp.ie, which  provides access to information on alcohol-related issues and the help and services available to people concerned about their own drinking or the drinking of a family member or friend.
