Ireland’s first Alcohol Awareness Week takes place from March 18 to 22 next, with Alcohol Action Ireland participating in a week of events focused on raising awareness of alcohol-related harm in Ireland and the policy solutions that can reduce that harm.
A series of events will take place throughout the week including a half day conference entitled, “The Power of Local Community in Reducing Harmful Drinking”. This will run alongside Ireland’s National Healthcare Conference taking place in the National Convention Centre Dublin on Wednesday, March 20.
Speakers include Minister of State at the Department of Health Alex White; Dr. Ann Hope, Department of Public Health and Primary Care, Trinity College Dublin; Dr. Walter Kern Scheffeldt, Clinical Psychologist, Zurich University of Teacher Education, and Claire Dineen Chair of the National Forum of the Family Resource Centre Programme.
There will also be a “Soapbox” session where speakers will get three minutes to present their arguments on how to effect changes. Among those taking part in this session are Alcohol Action Ireland CEO Fiona Ryan, Irish Times columnist John Waters; President Union of Students in Ireland, John Logue; Denis Bradley, former Vice Chair of Northern Ireland Policing Board, and Eamon O’Kane, Director of Derry Healthy Cities.
